A loan of $1,025 helped a member to buy seeds and farm inputs and to pay the cost of labor.

Benkadi 3 Group's story

The ten women of the Benkadi 3 group are married and live in traditional families. They, on average, are 38 years old and have three children. They all live in Fabougou in the region of Segou (the fourth administrative region of Mali). They know each other from their farming in the rainy season and through neighborhood, marriage, and family ties.

This group grow groundnuts, millet, and rice. With the goal of buying small pieces of equipment and supplying themselves with farm inputs, the members of the group joined Soro Yiriwaso and are now on their second loan cycle of the season.

Maissata (the women seated in the front on the right in the photo) leads the farming during the rainy season in Fabougou. She plans to use her loan to plow her field, buy seeds and fertilizers, and then to pay some young people to weed her field.

Sales of the crops for cash at the end of the rainy season will be used to pay back her loan and to support her children and a part of her family.
