María Dolores

Ecuador
Cuenca, Ecuador / Liquor Store / Off-License

A loan of $450 helped to buy liquor.

María Dolores's story

María is taking out her first loan on Kiva with her friends and fellow members of the 26-71 group. She lives in the community of Cuenca, which is surrounded by rolling countryside. As of December 1999 it is a World Heritage Site. The people are happy and very hard-working, and they still maintain the culture and traditions of their people. Maria is 36, married, and has two children ages 13 and 4. Her eldest child is in school, and her youngest is in pre-kindergarten. Her husband is a professional taxi driver. They do not have their own home, so they rent. Maria is an enterprising woman who has several businesses. She has had some phone booths, a grocery store, and a liquor store for seven years. She works Monday to Friday from 7:00 am to 12:00 am, and she works a full 24 hours on the weekends. Some days she also provides massages. She will invest the money from this loan in the purchase of liquor for her liquor store. Her dream is that her children will be professionals.
