A loan of $1,450 helped to buy organic fertilizer.

Marlene's story

Marlene, 26, is married to Emerson and they live in a house made of solid materials. Marlene is a farmer who grows profitable crops in her area and she has been in business for six years, earning a good income.

When she started out things were a little complicated because she was not used to working on a farm, but thanks to her efforts she was able to get ahead in a short amount of time. She started working on her parents-in-law's land but eventually used her earnings to buy an acre of land where she grows organic cocoa. She believes it is a very profitable crop in her area because one tree can produce several cobs per season.

In order to improve the quality of her production, Marlene usually treats her land with organic fertilizer. She hires workers at harvest time so she can dry the beans and sell them to local customers.

One of her main goals is to continue expanding her cropland to increase her profits. This is her first loan through Kiva; and she is grateful for the financial support and committed to paying back the loan on time. She plans to use the 4,000 PEN loan to buy organic fertilizer for her crops.
