María Juana's story

The members of Banco Comunal de Jesús De Nazaret [Jesus of Nazareth Communal Bank] meet every 15 days in the city of Portoviejo, capital of Manabí. The city has been known for many years as the City of Real Tamarinds because of the large quantity of tamarind fruit that grows there.

This is where 65-year-old María lives. One year ago, her dear husband died. This gave her great sadness, but she overcame it through the love and care of her four children, who are all adults now and live nearby. With her lives a 13-year-old boy, whom she has raised since he was small and whom she and her husband saw as their own son. He studies in school now.

In order to have her own income and move forward, María makes her living selling natural and cosmetic products from Avon and Yanbal (beauty items, cosmetics, perfumes, and ladies' accessories). Her sales style is door-to-door and she works everyday because she has many customers who are always buying her products. Her customers buy her natural products more than the rest, so she sells those the most, since they are very good products.

She will use this loan to buy natural and cosmetic products. She has been in the Banco Comunal since it began and she likes it for the help it has given her in difficult moments in her life.

Her dream is for her youngest son to finish his studies.
