A loan of $1,075 helped to buy rice, meat, fish and others.

Idalia Margarita's story

The “La Pila” communal bank meets every two weeks in La Pila in Montecristi canton. This place is very well-known in the province and in the country for its rich traditional culture. A vast variety of crafts manufactured by the residents using their ancestral methods can be found here.

Idalia, 53, lives here. She’s married and has two adult children; her daughter still lives with her. Her husband works in agriculture.

Idalia has a small dining room at her house which is located on a main avenue. She cooks delicious meals and works Monday to Saturday from 6am until 3pm since she only prepares breakfast and lunch. She works alone but sometimes her daughter helps her and so does her husband when he doesn’t have any work in the fields to do. She cooks different dishes to satisfy her customers’ taste buds which is why many people come by daily to enjoy her dishes because they are delicious. She’s been in this business for more than ten years and it’s what makes it possible for them to move forward because her husband does not earn much in the fields.

She will use this loan to buy rice, meat, fish and other foodstuffs to prepare her dishes. She’s been in the communal bank for four years and likes it because the loans are of much help for her to continue forward with her business. Her dream is to continue moving ahead and that her business improves even more.
