A loan of $600 helped a member to pay the costs of labor and to buy farm inputs, seeds, and small farm equipment.

Benkadi 4 Group's story

The members of the Benkadi 4 group are married women who, on average, are 36 years old and have three children. They live in traditional families in Nagousso, in the commune of Cercle de San, in the fourth administrative region of Mali. The group is collaborating with the micro-finance institution Soro Yiriwaso in order to better carry out their work during the rainy season. They are on their fourth loan with the institution, and their previous loans have all been repaid correctly.

Soutoura, who is the fourth woman standing from the left in the photo, grows groundnuts. With this loan she plans to buy farm inputs, seeds, small farm equipment and to pay the costs of labor to maintain a quarter hectare of land.

After the harvest, the crops will be sold in the villages of San and Kimparana to men and women customers. She hopes to earn 25,000 francs CFA at the end of the season. These earnings will allow her to pay back her loan and also to help her husband with the everyday expenses.

In this group: Marema, Soutoura, Tenema, Hawa, Fatoumata Zou, Fili, Halima, Baoumou, Kadia, Hawa
