Las Del Río ( Cuenca) Group's story

The “Las del Río” (The Ones from the River) group consists of 8 women who live around Jadan Parish in Cuenca, a place surrounded by beautiful scenery with an architecture that blends the ancient with the modern; its residents are very gracious and still retain the culture and traditions of their peoples. Their economic activity is agriculture, animal husbandry, rope making and some of them go into the city to work in various jobs.

One of this group’s members is María Rosario. She’s been in this group for three years and likes being with her girlfriends while at the same time it’s a quick way of getting capital for her business.

She is 42-years-old, married and has conceived ten children. One of them is married and lives independently, one of her sons is employed and helps her economically, one is attending university, three are in secondary school, three in primary school and her youngest son still stays at home. Her husband works as a day laborer and they own their house.

María Rosario works in agriculture growing vegetables and she has a tomato nursery; she also raises chickens, pigs, guinea pigs and cattle.

She will use her new loan to buy manure, tomato seeds and animal feed. Her goal is to enlarge the nursery.
