Maria Lidia's story

María, 43, is a woman who because of the zone she spent her childhood in and because of her parents’ limited economic resources was unable to go to school; she only completed second grade in primary school. Since childhood and because of her parents’ influence she’s worked growing coffee since that’s the family tradition and her only source of income.

Her marriage produced three children. A 17-year-old daughter who is attending secondary school and a 12-year-old daughter who is also in secondary school still live with her; her eldest daughter lives in a separate home. Her two daughters still living with her help with the coffee growing; weeding, feeding and picking the beans. The land they farm on was acquired through their own efforts; her husband, her daughters and she have worked together to have better quality of life. The land they work is 20 meters from home and they walk to it daily.

María is asking for a Comixmul loan to buy fertilizer and manure to provide maintenance for her coffee crop. Her dream is to be able to increase her coffee crops, to be the best producers in the zone and to earn higher income in order to also improve their daughters’ lives by means of schooling and other aspects necessary for their growth and learning.
