María Celeste

Ecuador
Montecristi, Ecuador / Phone Use Sales

A loan of $750 helped to buy phone cards, cellphone minutes from various phone carriers, and car parts.

María Celeste's story

The communal bank Bienestar y Progreso (Well-being and Progress) meets every other week in Colorado of the canton Montecristi. This area is known for its rich pre-colonial culture and for its nationally and internationally recognized artisanship. This is also the place of origin of the famous straw hats.

This is where María, 31 years old, lives with her husband and their two school-aged children (12 and 11 years old). Her husband is a businessman.

María is requesting this loan to help her husband. He has a car that he uses to distribute sodas. He delivers orders directly from the wholesale distributor to the cities of Montecristi and Manta. He is paid for each delivery. María, in order to earn her own money from home, sells phone cards, cellphone minutes from various phone carriers, and car parts. Her profits from these sales help her to pay for her children's education.

María will use this loan to buy phone cards, cellphone minutes from various phone carriers, and car parts. She has been a member of this communal bank for two years and says she likes it because the loans allow her to help her husband. María's dream is to give her children the best.
