A loan of $1,600 helped to buy pants, tops, and Avon products.

Irene Yaqueline's story

The communal bank Bienestar y Progreso (Well-being and Progress) meets every other week in Colorado of the canton Montecristi. This area is known for its rich pre-colonial culture and for its nationally and internationally recognized artisanship. This is also the place of origin of the famous straw hats.

Irene, 40 years old, lives here with her parents. She is single. Irene has been with this communal bank group since its beginning and is currently the group's treasurer. She likes this group because the members are very close. Irene works in a public institution as well as in her own small business. She sells all kinds of clothing and Avon products (cosmetics, perfumes, women's accessories, and beauty products). Irene sells products in her workplace as well as from a small shop she runs from her home. While Irene is working, she hires another person to tend to her store and pays them monthly for their work. Irene allows her customers to buy products on credit and she collects payments every two days. She orders her merchandise from New York, which is why her customers ask to see her new products after each order. Irene has been running this business for three years and it has gone very well for her.

This loan will be used to buy pants, tops, and Avon products. Irene's dream is to by a car to use to get to work.
