A loan of $1,250 helped a member to purchase seeds, farm inputs, and sundry equipment.

Kotognontala 3 Group's story

The ten women of "Kotognontala 3" are all married in traditional families, and they average 37 years of age and two children each, all living in the village of Sirakorobougopu, in Région de Ségou (4th administrative region of the Republic of Mali). They know one another through their seasonal farmwork and by ties of community, marriage, and kinship in the village. They grow peanuts, millet, and rice.

With the goal of purchasing various equipment and stocking up on farm inputs, the group members found out about the microfinance institution Soro Yiriwaso and are now on their third farm loan cycle.

Ms. Maimouna (last woman standing at the right in the photo) is a great seasonal farmwork leader in the village of Sirakorobougou. She intends to use her loan to plow her field, purchase seeds and manure, and then pay youngsters to weed her field. Sales of her produce are made in cash at the end of the rainy season to pay back her loan, and finally to have revenues to provide for the children and some for the family.

In this group: Maimouna, Mamou, Magnini, Nah, Fatoumata, Awa, Mariam, Sitan.b, Minata, Djadja
