Mariatu's story

Meet Mariatu. She is a 44 year-old from Waterloo eastern area in Sierra Leone. She is divorced with 3 children between the ages of 7 and 11. Her children are currently attending school.

In 2005, Mariatu established a local food business within the Waterloo community. She began her business because she wanted to create a permanent source of income to support her children; She works at the business from 8:00am until 7:00 pm, 7 days per week. She says that the main challenge to her business is price inflation of goods.

Mariatu requires a loan in order to purchase more local food like palm oil, gari, and ginger. She hopes that the extra income from this loan will allow her to become more successful and pay her children's school fees. In the future, Mariatu plans to expand her enterprise to wholesale.
