A loan of $50 helped to pay for 10 low cost LED lights to resell to rural households without electricity.

Jean Nepo's story

Jean Nepo is a 41-year-old man from Rulindo District in the Northern Province of Rwanda.

He is seeking a top-up loan of 30,000 RWF (Rwandan francs) to purchase 10 additional rechargeable LED lights, which he will resell to people without electricity in his village. Every week or so, these customers will return to him to have their lights recharged for just 100 RWF.

Jean Nepo started selling lights in September 2012, and he has sold 60 lights to date (20 with the help of Kiva), providing clean energy to 300 people.

He is also a shopkeeper and will reinvest the money he makes into expanding his other business to earn more money for himself, his wife, Dative, and their four children.
