A loan of $475 helped to purchase poultry.

Joseph's story

Joseph lives in the Litein area of Kenya. He has 5 children and has been doing this work for 30 years. His primary income sources are milk, eggs, tea, and transportation services.

He stated what is most enjoyable about farming: 'Selling farm products.' His biggest challenge is 'Raising funds.' Animals on the farm have been given no names.

Joseph was asked why he chose Juhudi Kilimo for this loan, to which he replied: 'it has approachable officers.' This client was also asked what was learned during Juhudi's required micro-finance training session: 'That loans are given to those in a group.'

His highest monthly expense is farming costs. When asked 'How will this loan benefit his family?', Joseph replied 'Will educate his children.'

As part of Juhudi's loan appraisal process, each borrower's assets are evaluated. Joseph owns the following: 'a cow, poultry, a motorcycle' but does not own 'a pig, a pump, a bicycle, an automobile'. Juhudi Kilimo also tries to measure any change in living standards based on this loan. This borrower has in the household 'a mosquito net, electricity, a sewing machine, a TV, a DVD' but does not have 'solar power, or running water'.

Note: To create this loan profile, Juhudi Kilimo used a mobile device to gather information in the field and send the data to a central online repository, thus reducing paper use, making the process more efficient, and keeping costs down."
