Angel Ramiro's story

Angel is a responsible and entrepreneurial person. He is 58 years old, and in spite of only finishing primary school, he has always worked to improve his standard of living. He is single. He has 4 children, all of whom are economically independent and have their own families, but still visit their father periodically. Angel lives alone in Quinindé, a cantón of the province of Esmeraldas, which provides various cities in Ecuador with products such as banana, cacao, coffee, African palm, and forest products. Commerce is the daily work of the majority of the area’s inhabitants. This increased when the roads to the cantón were improved, allowing greater commercial movement, especially on the weekends when merchants of all sorts come out to offer their products in the markets to their potential customers, who usually are rural farmers. Tourism is also an important source of income for this cantón because its natural ecosystem has a great variety of places to visit, such as waterfalls, rivers, and forests which have flowers and animals that adorn this city. In several areas of the province, families dedicate themselves to agriculture. Many times their effort is not appreciated and business pay very low prices for the products their lands produce. Even so, this way of life is always present.

Angel has worked in commerce in various places and he always worked to give his children what they needed. Six years ago, he decided to start his own business selling personal products, such as headbands, brushes, toothpaste, shampoo, conditioner, hair gel, etc. He established his business in a small corridor in his house in the center of the city, and he spends at least 8 hours per day in his store. He has more and more customers as time goes by, though, as with all businesses, there are periods when sales are slow. Angel explains that in this business it is very important to have a good variety of products so that the customers can find everything they need in one place. He has become an expert through experience and empirical knowledge through the years, and now he is prepared to grow his business. In order to do this he is requesting a loan that he will use to buy a variety of perfumes for women, men, and children, which is a product that is in high demand and which, until now, he has not had in his business. Angel hopes that with this addition to his inventory his number of customers will grow and that his income will also grow so that one day he will be able to improve his business’s infrastructure and expand the store.
