The members of the group Tiessiri are men averaging 45 years of age and four children each, all living in polygamous families in N’Tessoni, a village in Sikasso (3rd administrative region of the Republic of Mali). The men are collaborating with the microfinance institution Soro Yiriwaso to carry out their farm work during the rainy season. They are on their fifth loan with the institution. The past loans were indeed paid back.

The crop grown is corn, as is the case with Mr. Brehima, who is standing first from the left in the photo. With his loan, he intends to purchase seeds and fertilizer for maintaining 3 hectares.

After the harvest, the produce is sold in the village, at the Sikasso market, to a customer base composed of men and women. He plans on making a profit of 500,000 francs CFA per planting. This profit will enable him to repay the loan with interest and also to meet his family's day-to-day expenses.

This is a Group Loan

In a group loan, each member of the group receives an individual loan but is part of a larger group of individuals. The group is there to provide support to the members and to provide a system of peer pressure, but groups may or may not be formally bound by a group guarantee. In cases where there is a group guarantee, members of the group are responsible for paying back the loans of their fellow group members in the case of delinquency or default.

Kiva's Field Partners typically feature one borrower from a group. The loan description, sector, and other attributes for a group loan profile are determined by the featured borrower's loan. The other members of the group are not required to use their loans for the same purpose.
