Alicia's story

Alicia, 38, lives with her husband and three children in an adobe house. Alicia works in agriculture and has always grown cocoa beans and organic coffee. Her daily work consists in keeping her farmland in good condition in order to cover household expenses with the sale of products she grows; she also raises roosters and chickens. She works almost all year with help from her husband and hiring local day laborers to help ease the chores. Part of her daily chores is also to care well for her fowl because according to what she says they must be fed and cleaned adequately in order to be sold in various street markets and markets. She own two mini coops for roosters at her country house near her fields and another one in her house in town. She’s able to support her family this way and hopes to use the money she’s been saving to improve her house replacing the adobe with bricks and cement. On this occasion she wants to have 3,000 new soles to improve the sheds; she will buy metallic mesh and wood slats.
