A loan of $400 helped a member to buy more drinks such as sodas and snacks to resell.

Martha's Group's story

Martha's Group is comprised of five hardworking women. Martha is 15 years old and lives in the town of Kumi in the Mbale region of Uganda. For the past year, Martha has been working hard to manage her small business which sells soft drinks, sodas and snacks.

To help expand her business, Martha has requested a loan of 200,000 Ugandan Shillings from BRAC Uganda. The loan will be used to buy more drinks such as sodas and snacks to resell as well as will help Martha to generate greater profits and have a better life. Martha hopes that, in the future, she will be able to expand into a retail shop.

Martha is a member of BRAC's Empowerment and Livelihood for Adolescents (ELA) program. In addition to microfinance loans, the program provides both a safe place for young Ugandan women to take part in group activities and a forum for life skills training.
