A loan of $375 helped to buy organic fertilizer.

Maura's story

Maura is 46 years old; she is a single mother to her three children, who live with her in a solidly built house. Her main source of income is the field where she has worked for over 20 years growing some of the most profitable crops in the area, such as cacao.

She learned to farm she when she was a little girl, as her parents also worked in the fields.

She currently has 2 ha of crops and she has more cacao fields because she believes that, unlike other crops in the area, this one leaves her with the best earnings at the end of the season. She hires laborers from the area for the day-to-day work and they do the more involved jobs, such as pulling weeds and cutting bad branches. When she harvests her produce she dries it and sells it to local buyers, where she gets back the money she invested and sometimes extra.

She is very happy with her work because she can support her children financially and send them to school with everything they need to one day become professionals. This is her fourth loan with Kiva and she is very thankful for the help she has received to get ahead. This time she is asking for 1,000 nuevos soles to buy organic fertilizer to feed her crops.
