A loan of $525 helped a member purchase each a solar home system that will provide important economic savings and health benefits.

Alberto's Group's story

Alberto, Francisco and Salvador live in Nautla, Veracruz; in a small off the grid community named Pedernales. They all work in the field since they were kids, and they have always depended on the seasonal harvest which makes their incomes very unstable.

Alberto is 33 years old and he and his wife live here because his field is closer to home, and moving to a big town is very expensive and they wish they had the same services in their community. He and his family have always depended on diesel lamps and candles to light their house, but these sources are not only dangerous, but expensive and unreliable. He knows that using the solar system in his house, he would not only save a lot of money (almost five dollars a week), but he and his wife will stop inhaling the fumes, which is very important for him because he knows this is very dangerous for their health. Also, he thinks that the light provided by the diesel lamp is not good enough and, after sunset, they can’t read or finish their household activities.
