Orjah Group's story

Meet the members of the “Orjah” group from Koidu, a city in Eastern Sierra Leone. They are all local entrepreneurs who have come to SMT, a partner of Kiva.org, to apply for a loan of SLL 400,000 for each member. With the help of this loan, they will be able to expand their respective businesses, increase their sales and consequently improve their living conditions.

Elizabeth is the featured leader of this group. The 26-year-old is married to a diamond miner and the couple has three children of whom two are attending primary schools. Elizabeth has been a businesswoman for five years now. She sells market food – palm oil, onions, margi (used to give sauce a sweet taste), peppers, etc. With her share of this loan, Elizabeth will buy the above-mentioned items in wholesale to add to her current stock.
