A loan of $1,400 helped to buy fabric, thread, closures and other sewing supplies.

Marella's story

The communal bank "Las Palmas KM 14" meets every 15 days in the area of Montecristi which is known for its rich pre-colonial culture and craftsmanship, both of which are nationally and internationally recognized.

This is where Marella, 62, lives. Her husband died several years ago but they had 12 children who are now independent adults. She has worked as a seamstress since she was young and she learned sewing at an academy in this city.

Marella is a very hard-working woman who likes to support herself. Over 15 years ago she set up a sewing shop in her home where she makes all kinds of clothing but enjoys mostly making women's fashion. She does both tailoring and mending of clothes to earn an income. She works every day and is currently very busy because school will begin soon and uniforms will have to be made.

She plans to use this loan to buy fabric, thread, closures and other sewing supplies. She is a founding member of the communal bank and enjoys receiving the support of the loans in order to get ahead.

Her goal is to stay healthy and have plenty of work.
