The members of the Benkelema 2 group are married women who are on average 37 years of age with four children. They all live in polygamous families in Monpiela, a village in the municipality of Niena in Sikasso, the 3rd administrative region of Mali.

They work with the Soro Yiriwaso microfinance institution to carry out their agricultural activities during the rainy season. They are on their seventh loan with the institution, and previous loans have been duly repaid.

Kadiatou, who is standing in the middle, cultivates groundnuts. She intends to use her loan to buy seeds and fertilizers to maintain 1.5 hectares (3.7 acres).

After harvesting, the production is sold in the village, and at the Sikasso market to a clientele composed of men and women.

She expects to achieve an average profit of 150,000 FCFA per growing season. The profits will enable her to pay off her loan and also help her husband with daily expenses.

This is a Group Loan

In a group loan, each member of the group receives an individual loan but is part of a larger group of individuals. The group is there to provide support to the members and to provide a system of peer pressure, but groups may or may not be formally bound by a group guarantee. In cases where there is a group guarantee, members of the group are responsible for paying back the loans of their fellow group members in the case of delinquency or default.

Kiva's Field Partners typically feature one borrower from a group. The loan description, sector, and other attributes for a group loan profile are determined by the featured borrower's loan. The other members of the group are not required to use their loans for the same purpose.
