Even though Ama grew up in poverty without an education, this has not stopped her from fulfilling her dream of achieving a better life for her and her family. Currently, Ama is an entrepreneur. She prepares and sells Banku for a living. Banku is a traditional Ghanaian dish made using fermented corn/cassava dough that is mixed proportionally and cooked in hot water into a smooth, whitish and consistent paste. She primarily sells her Banku in Asafora (near Cape Coast). Her business enterprise has grown substantially since she began 10 years ago. She uses the income from her business to help her husband raise their 5 children.
Ama has identified that there are growing demands among consumers for her Banku. Nevertheless, she is unable to meet their needs due to a limited inventory capacity, so she aims to use her loan to purchase a greater quantity of maize and cassava, therefore helping her to prepare more of her tasty Banku. With the new profits from her expanded business, Ama wants to buck the trend by ensuring that all her children will be given the opportunity to further distance their family from poverty.
