Jacinta lives in Nkubu, in the Meru region of Eastern Kenya. This is a very fertile land situated at the slopes of Mt. Kenya. She is married and has three children. She has practiced farming for eighteen years and her source of income is maize and beans.
Jacinta requested a loan of 60,000 KES from Juhudi Kilimo to construct a zero grazing unit and a water tank. This will create a good environment for her dairy cows and provide enough water for her crops and livestock. This will bring in more income because of the increased level of production, thus improving her living standards. The challenges she faces are unexpected climate changes and poor infrastructure.
In five years’ time, she plans to buy a piece of land. Jacinta says that Juhudi Kilimo is the most reliable microfinance institution for her.
To facilitate a partnership between Kiva and Juhudi Kilimo, K-Rep Group (Juhudi Kilimo’s 100% owner) has guaranteed Kiva funds in the event of institutional default. Lenders should be aware that the risk of borrower default remains borne by the lender.
