Maria Isabel's story

María, 27, is a young and strong woman, and her life is full of energy and joy. She lives in a common-law marriage and has two children who are six and two. María finished primary school thanks to her parents’ help, but she could not continue studying because of the lack of money and her parents’ difficult economic situation. She works as an assistant for a local cooperative for the timber industry, where she was taught how to grow coffee, corn and beans. She has been growing them for more than ten years, and now her partner helps her. They own the land where they work, thanks to an inheritance that her father-in-law left them to help them have a better income. This piece of land is located five minutes away from their house and they go every day to give maintenance to the crops, which are sold in the local marketplace to some customers that come to the region.

María needs help to buy compost and fertilizers for her coffee plantations, which will ensure a healthy plantation, free from plagues and harming bugs. Her short-term goal is to be able to buy more land in order to grow more and generate more income for her family. Her dream is to improve her family’s lifestyle, giving her children the opportunity to study and be the best they can be. Also, to give them the opportunities and good conditions needed to have a good working life, considering that they will inherit the legacy that she and her husband are strengthening today.
