A loan of $500 helped to buy compost, fertilizers, and seeds and to pay for the labor to plant beans.

Santos's story

Santos, age 46, is a humble farmer. He lives in the El Escobillo community on the outskirts of Boaco. He is married and has four children. He has been growing corn and beans ever since he was 15 years old. He did manage to complete elementary school, and his mother gifted him with a can of beans. This is how he started to plant his own garden. Now he has his own cows. Even though there are not a lot, they help him to get other income when he is not planting. He does his farm activities with his children and with a man whom he pays to keep his field clean. He is requesting the loan to buy compost, fertilizers, and seeds and to pay for the labor to plant beans. He hopes to get a good production to take to Managua, the capital, to sell. That is where they pay the best price for his products. The next thing that he wants to do is get more animals. Once he has repaid the loan, he wants to buy a calf.
