A loan of $1,950 helped a member to buy soap, batteries, biscuits, chewing gum, etc., in bulk to add to his business.

Sahr's Group's story

Pictured above is a group of teachers from the eastern city of Koidu. They have come to SMT, a partner of Kiva.org based in Makeni city in northern Sierra Leone, to apply for a loan of 8,300,000.00 SLL (Sierra Leone leones). With the help of this loan, they will be able to solve their immediate financial needs and then gradually repay the loan, using their monthly salaries. It is their school’s bursar who is directly responsible for doing the deductions and making the repayments on their behalf.

Their featured leader is Sahr. Born in Koidu, the 31-year-old is married and has two children – one in primary school, and the other is not of school-going age. Sahr has been a professional teacher for four years now. In addition to his job as a teacher, Sahr also sells items like soap, batteries, biscuits, chewing gum, etc., in order to earn additional funds. With his share of this loan, he is going to invest it in his business by buying the aforementioned items in bulk to add to his business.
