A loan of $700 helped a member to purchase more hair extensions and a dryer for the salon.

Sarah's Group's story

Sarah's group is comprised of three hard-working women. Sarah is 22 years old and lives in the town of Kalisizo in the Masaka region of Uganda. She is single and has two children, with one of them currently in school. For the past two years, Sarah has been working hard to manage her salon where she does hair dressing. To help expand her business, Sarah has requested a loan of 800,000 Ugandan Shillings from BRAC Uganda. The loan will be used to purchase more hair extensions and a dryer for the salon, and will help Sarah to generate greater profits and buy more hair cosmetics and hair braids. Sarah hopes that in the future she will be able to expand her business into a bigger salon. Sarah is a member of BRAC's Empowerment and Livelihood for Adolescents (ELA) program. In addition to microfinance loans, the program provides both a safe place for young Ugandan women to take part in group activities, and a forum for life-skills training.
