A loan of $700 helped a member to purchase more materials for making crafts to sell.

Margret's Group's story

Margret's group is comprised of thee hard-working women. Margret is 18 years old and lives in the town of Nakifuma in the Mukono region of Uganda. For the past two years, Margret has been working hard to manage her handcraft business, through which sells handcrafted items.

To help expand her business, Margret has requested a loan of 700,000 Ugandan shillings from BRAC Uganda. The loan will be used to purchase more materials for making crafts to sell and will help Margret to generate greater profits and take good care of her sickly mother. Margret hopes that in the future she will be able to expand her business and own a small shop in which to sell her crafts, since she currently sells them on the verandah.

Margret is a member of BRAC's Empowerment and Livelihood for Adolescents (ELA) program. In addition to microfinance loans, the program provides both a safe place for young Ugandan women to take part in group activities and a forum for life-skills training.
