A loan of $1,000 helped to buy smoked fish.

Aîssata's story

Aïssata is around 48 years old and mother to six children. She lives with her husband and their children in a nuclear family in Hamdallaye Extension, one of the districts in the outskirts of the town of Sikasso. After a number of unsuccessful business ventures, Aîssata finally launched herself into buying and selling smoked fish over 20 years ago. She buys her smoked fish by order from her parents in Mopti and then resells them at the Grand Market and on fair days. She is in great demand from her customers for the quality of the fish she presents.

She is on her fourth individual loan having repaid three previous loans in full. With this fourth loan she is planning to buy 20 cartons of smoked fish of varying quality. With this loan she is expecting to make a monthly profit of 150,000FCFA. These profits will enable her to contribute to the family expenses and pay the interest on her loan; the balance will be invested in her activity.

Aîssata's ambition is to become a significant trader in the market.
