A loan of $1,350 helped to buy organic fertilizer.

Juana's story

Juana, 53, is married to Narciso who is 48 and with whom she has a home made of adobe and lives together with their five children. She owns a five hectare plot of land in which she grows organic cacao, coffee and annatto.

In getting married to Narciso, Juana received a plot of agricultural land from her parents as inheritance to till and earn money. Years on, she was successful in acquiring more land, where there is organic cacao. Thanks to the quality of the soil, she is able to obtain a good quality of product.

The main inconvenience Juana faced when she started this work was that of not having enough money to hire local laborers nor organic fertilizer which forced her to triple her working hours. Every morning, she heads to her plots of land to work them all with the aim of obtaining high-quality cacao and recuperating the capital invested by selling the grains to buyers in the area.

Juana can always rely on her children's help for small jobs and today she hires workers to do the weeding and harvesting. Her main objective is to build her home with good materials as her current home is already presenting signs of damage over the course of time.

This is the second time that Kiva has given Juana a loan which is why she is grateful and believes that the money given is a good work tool. On this occasion, Juana needs a loan of 3,500 Peruvian Nuevos Soles to buy organic fertilizer.
