Yem is a resident living in Prey Chor district, which is a public gathering area and a central district surrounded by other Kompong Cham districts. The region is located in an area of high agricultural prevalence; it is very fertile and close to her home. Yem has been in farming for years and has gained valueable experience, which allows her to have better yields in each harvest season. Aside from farming, Yem can make additional income by selling steamed sweet corn from her old bike, generating approximately KHR 10,000 each day.

Yem wants to build a room on the ground floor to keep the personal belongings of her family, yet she doesn’t have enough money to buy some materials for the construction. That is why she is now taking out a loan through HKL as her first Kiva loan. Through this loan, she believes that she will be able to make better living conditions for her family.

About HKL

Hattha Kaksekar Limited is one of the largest and most successful microfinance institutions (MFIs) in Cambodia. The organization provides microfinance services to the poor, particularly women, in urban and rural areas. Kiva lenders’ funds will be used to expand the outreach of HKL’s financial services to a greater number of clients in rural areas of Cambodia.

About Housing Loans

Many poor families cannot afford housing that meets their needs. When you make a housing loan on Kiva, you give people access to flexible capital to obtain or improve their homes. Better housing means better health, sanitation, and even educational outcomes for children. A house can also be much more for entrepreneurs who run businesses out of their homes. In this way, housing and small business loans on Kiva share a common purpose: to alleviate poverty and enable families to enjoy more stable lives.
