A loan of $1,700 helped to buy nets, strings, fuel and food.

Mercedes Antonieta's story

The Communal Bank Ruta Del Sol meets every other week in Puerto López, a place surrounded by beautiful beaches and tourist attractions. Every year the humpback whales arrive to mate, an event that attracts many tourists at this time of the year. Here is where Mercedes lives. She is 20-year old woman, married and mother of three children, aged 5, 2 and 10 months. Her older child is starting school this year and her husband works in fishing.

Mercedes is a great housewife and is requesting a loan so that her husband can use it for his fishing work. He uses a small boat and sails offshore to fish with another 17 people. They leave for one or two weeks and come back with the products that the sea has provided. Then they give them to the wholesalers so that they can distribute them throughout the province. Her husband has been in this profession since he was very young following the steps of his father. This is how he gets ahead and supports his family. He will use this loan to buy nets, strings, fuel and food for when they are offshore.

She has been with the Communal Bank for 1.5 years and likes it because she can help her husband thanks to the loans. Her dream is that nothing will ever happen when her husband is fishing offshore and to give a good education to her children.
