Salone Microfinance Trust (SMT), a partner of Kiva.org in Sierra Leone, is very pleased to present to you Mohamed, who is 45 years old and a very resourceful husband and father who works hard to provide for his family. He has worked as a boiler operator at a local sugar company for the past nine years while also growing rice on his farm. He is requesting a loan for SLL 2,500,000 from SMT to hire workers to prepare his land for planting; with the approaching rainy season, now is the perfect time to plow the land and begin planting fields. This will allow Mohamed to create jobs in his local community while continuing to strive for a better life for his wife and four children. By partnering with local companies, SMT is able to provide borrowers like Mohamed with microloans that are repaid through payroll deductions.
About Salone Microfinance Trust (SMT)
Salone Microfinance Trust (SMT) is Kiva’s oldest field partner in Sierra Leone. SMT began operations in 2002 as a microcredit program of the NGO Child Fund Sierra Leone under a USAID program to assist the reintegration of ex combatants back into their communities. Today, SMT offers group, agricultural, individual and salary loans to micro-entrepreneurs through six branches and one sub-branch in rural, urban, and peri-urban areas. By providing small loans and other financial services, SMT empowers poor clients to generate more income to help their families, improve their wellbeing, and create a more vibrant private small-business sector in Sierra Leone.
