A loan of $1,150 helped to buy organic fertilizer.

Alfonso's story

Alfonso, 43, is married to Lucy, the mother of his five children. They live in a rented house with two of their children, aged 15 and 4. Their house is in the rural area.

Since he was a child, he has worked in agriculture, his parents did the same type of work.

He is a determined and consistent man, therefore all his harvests are well negotiated. He plants vegetables such as: beans, peas, corn, potatoes, salad, cauliflower and other vegetables in plots that he rents in two ways: with money or with his products.

Four years ago he started buying and selling vegetables he got from his neighbors or from his own harvest.

With Lucy's help he takes his merchandise to the city of Oroya located an hour and a half from Tarma.

"Selling in Oroya is very profitable because the city does not produce anything being a mining center" he says.

He hopes for economic stability so he can raise his youngest children without any problems.

This is the second loan from Kiva. He is thankful for the opportunity to progress so he can improve his quality of life.

For this reason he is committed to pay his installments on time.

Alfonso will invest the 3,000 PEN ($1150) in organic fertilizar for the planting season.
