Benkan Group's story

Married mainly in traditional extended families, the four women of the group BENKAN are on average 43 years old and have 6 children. They all live in the town of Santoro de San in the region of Ségou (4th administrative region of Mali) and met through neighborhood, professional business and family ties. They buy and sell vegetables, clothing, fish and do catering. With the goal of satisfying the needs of their clientele which is more and more numerous and demanding, the members of the group decided to join the loan program of Soro Yiriwaso and are on their 12th loan in solidarity, after having correctly repaid the two previous loans. Madam Maimouna, president of the association (2nd from the right to the left) excels in the sale of rich and wax damask fabrics. She is very much in demand in her neighborhood and at the large market. She plans to use her loan to buy 50 pieces of wax damask fabrics and 4 pieces of rich damask fabrics in Bamako. She carries out her sales for cash, retail and for credit to a mixed clientele. With this loan, Madam Maimouna hopes to make an average monthly profit of 70,000 FCFA which will be used to be reinvested in her business and to help her spouse in taking care of the needs of the home.
