Maa Jageswari Self Help Group consists of 11 members, of whom all are women residing in the same neighborhood. The members of this group are very responsible and ambitious.

One of them is Tikan, who is a 54-year-old lady living with her husband and her two children. She is engaged in running a small furniture shop. She takes orders from her customers for making doors, chairs, tables, etc., and gets them ready with the help of her labourers. She earns 8,000 INR per month from this activity, which is not sufficient for her family to survive on.

She wants to enlarge her business by taking orders in bulk from her customers and fulfilling their demands on time. She wants to purchase new and advanced tools for making furniture and some wooden logs to prepare ready-made furniture like small tables, coffee tables, etc.

Tikan, along with her group, has applied for the loan amount of 275,000 INR. She has a plan to use her portion of the loan for purchasing the above items. She says that by doing so, her family's monthly income will increase and she will be able to give her family a good living standard.

This is a Group Loan

In a group loan, each member of the group receives an individual loan but is part of a larger group of individuals. The group is there to provide support to the members and to provide a system of peer pressure, but groups may or may not be formally bound by a group guarantee. In cases where there is a group guarantee, members of the group are responsible for paying back the loans of their fellow group members in the case of delinquency or default.

Kiva's Field Partners typically feature one borrower from a group. The loan description, sector, and other attributes for a group loan profile are determined by the featured borrower's loan. The other members of the group are not required to use their loans for the same purpose.
