A loan of $1,000 helped to buy firewood.

Djelika's story

Mrs. Djélika is 51 years old, married and the mother of three. She lives with her husband and children in the Kôkô district, Koutiala prefecture (Sikasso Region). She has abandoned her studies early and started earning a living. After trying various activities without success, nine years ago she started buying and reselling firewood.

Women in Mali depend on firewood in order to be able to do their cooking, which is why Djelika has many customers and can sell several trailer loads each month. After having to deal with stock shortages during the rainy season, she lost no time in turning to the Soro Yiriwaso microfinance institution once again. With two loans correctly repaid, she is on her third loan, which will be used to buy three trailer loads of firewood in the villages near the town of Koutiala. She sells in front of her home in the Kôkô district, for cash, to a diverse clientele.

With this loan added to her working capital, she plans to achieve a monthly revenue of 115,000 West African francs, which she will use to repay Soro’s interest, help cover everyday household expenses, and reinvest the rest in her business.
