Kaliro, Uganda / Grocery Store

A loan of $400 helped a member to purchase more maize flour, rice, cooking oil and juice to sell.

Esther's Group's story

Esther's group is comprised of 2 hard working women. Esther is 17 years old and lives in the town of Kaliro in the Iganga region of Uganda. For the past year, Esther has been working hard to manage her retail shop, which sells rice, juice, cooking oil and beans.

To help expand her business, Esther has requested a loan of 500,000 Ugandan Shillings from BRAC Uganda. The loan will be used to purchase more maize flour, rice, cooking oil and juice to sell in the store, and will help Esther to generate greater profits and help her family in buying basic needs. Esther hopes that in the future she will be able to expand her store into a wholesale shop.

Esther is a member of BRAC's Empowerment and Livelihood for Adolescents (ELA) program. In addition to microfinance loans, the program provides both a safe place for young Ugandan women to take part in group activities, and a forum for life-skills training.
