A loan of $475 helped a member to purchase Irish potatoes, cooking oil and charcoal for the restaurant.

Hellen's Group's story

Hellen's group is comprised of four hardworking women. Hellen is 21 years old and lives in the town of Mubende in the Mubende region of Uganda. She is single and has one child. For the past two years, Hellen has been working hard to manage her restaurant where she sells convenience foods.

To help expand her business, Hellen has requested a loan of 300,000 Ugandan Shillings from BRAC Uganda. The loan will be used to purchase Irish potatoes, cooking oil and charcoal for the restaurant, and will help Hellen to generate greater profits so that she can take care of her child and her family. Hellen hopes that, in the future, she will be able to build a residential house for herself.

Hellen is a member of BRAC's Empowerment and Livelihood for Adolescents (ELA) program. In addition to microfinance loans, the program provides both a safe place for young Ugandan women to take part in group activities, and a forum for life-skills training.
