A loan of $500 helped to buy manure, leaf fertilizers, and fungicides, and to pay the rent on the land where he grows the corn, beans, and sorghum..

José Melecio's story

José, age 55, is married and has 11 children. He lives with his wife and children. He got married when he was 34. He learned the trade of making hammocks when he got married. She was the one who taught him, and since then he has worked at this business activity.

After making them, he sells them, and he also makes them by order. Together with his wife and children, he makes six to eight hammocks a week. Before, he only used to do agricultural work, growing corn, beans, and sorghum. Nowadays he continues growing these basic crops together with his children. The crops are for the family’s consumption.

He gets the supplies to make the hammocks in a city. In order to get there he has to take two buses. He travels every 8 or 15 days, according to the movement of the hammocks. This is the same place where he gets the agricultural supplies.

The loan that he is requesting from the Fundación Campo is to buy manure, leaf fertilizers, and fungicides. He will also use the loan to pay the rent on the land where he grows the corn, beans, and sorghum. This way José will be able to cultivate in order to get the crops for his family’s consumption. He will sell the other part.

His objective is to build his own house.
