Umu's Group's story

Salone Microfinance Trust (SMT) is very pleased to present to you members of this group of teachers from Kenema, a city in eastern Sierra Leone. This group of teachers has come to SMT, a partner of Kiva, to apply for a loan of 5,800,000 Sierra Leonean leones for the entire team in order to meet their immediate and most pressing financial needs. At the end of each month, they can easily repay the loan using their salaries. It is their school’s bursar who is directly responsible for doing the deductions and making the repayments on their behalf.

Umu, who is pictured on the right, is the featured leader of this group. The 53-year-old is a native of Freetown, Sierra Leone’s capital city. She is a widow and has three children who are no longer attending school. Umu has been a professional teacher for 28 years now. She has requested this loan in order to buy house building materials like iron corrugated sheets, sand, nails, iron rods, etc., for the construction of a dwelling house.
