A loan of $425 helped to buy smoked fish.

Marie Madeleine's story

Mrs. Marie, age 58, is a widow and the mother of seven children. She lives with them in Torakabougou, a neighborhood in Bougouni.

She did not receive a formal education, and became interested early on in revenue-generating businesses, in particular the buying and selling of condiments and smoked fish.

She learned this trade from her mother. Having more than ten years of experience, she's very much in demand and much appreciated in Bougouni and the area around.

Eager to satisfy an ever-increasing clientele, she's seeking support from Kiva's partner, Soro Yiriwaso, from which she already obtained seven solidarity loans (group loans) that were all repaid without problems.

Marie is seeking her first personal loan, to be used to buy 75 kg of smoked fish. She gets her supplies in Mopti Region, the fifth administrative region of Mali.

She sells at the market in Torakabougou, but also at her home, to a mixed-gender clientele. Her inventory turnover is very high, and she foresees turning a monthly profit of XOF 40'000 (ca US$ 80).

With her profits, she will take care of some of the family's expenses and further improve her business.
