A loan of $1,075 helped to buy fish.

María Monserrate's story

The members of the José Cesario Reyes communal bank meet every two weeks in the Montecristi settlement, an area nationally and internationally known for its rich culture, and the place of the famous straw hats. Maria lives here. She is 41 years old, married, and has four children, ages 21, 18, 15, and 13. All of her children still live with her. The two youngest attend high school. Her husband is a merchant. Maria is asking for this loan so she can help her husband who sells fish. He travels the entire city on his tricycle selling his products. He buys his products from fishermen at the beaches in Manta at dawn and has been doing this for more than 12 years. He works hard so that his family is not in need of anything. The money from this loan will be used to buy fish to sell daily. She is a founding member of the communal bank and enjoys it because of the help she receives from the loans. They help her get ahead. Her dream is to buy a car so that her husband can make his rounds.
