A loan of $300 helped to buy beehives for honey production.

Joseph's story

Joseph lives in Mafisini, a small town in Kwale county. Kwale county is located on the Kenyan coast near the border of Tanzania. While beekeeping has not historically been a major activity in the region, the mangrove swamps closer to the coast and large passion fruit farms inland provide bees with robust sources of nectar. Though most farmers in the area are new to beekeeping, many are very enthusiastic about keeping bees.

Joseph is unmarried and is currently growing mangoes on his land. One of the things that attracted Joseph to beekeeping was pollination: he is looking forward to increases in yields on his mangoes from the bees’ activity. He also likes working with Honey Care because he believes that their “program unites farmers.”

This is Joseph’s first loan and he plans to use the income generated from his hives to support local orphans. In the future, Joseph hopes to be able to raise income to support other social programs.
