A loan of $300 helped to buy beehives for honey production.

Kimanthi's story

Kimanthi lives in Maphombe, a small town in Kwale county. Kwale county is located on the Kenyan coast near the border of Tanzania. While beekeeping has not historically been a major activity in the region, the mangrove swamps closer to the coast and large passion fruit farms inland provide bees with robust sources of nectar. Though most farmers in the area are new to beekeeping, many are very enthusiastic about keeping bees.

Kimanthi is married and has seven children. He has been farming for 65 years and is currently tending an orange orchard on his land. He likes Honey Care Africa because they give good advice on hive placement and ways to increase honey production. He likes beekeeping because it is a good project that will generate income.

This is Kimanthi’s first loan and he plans to save some of the income generated from his beehives to build a family house.
