Estrellitas (Cuenca) Group's story

The communal bank Estrellitas consists of 10 women and 2 men who are friends. They work daily in several markets in the city. They work in the commercial activity that has allowed them to cover their household expenses and improve their economic stability. They are kind and gentle people who still maintain the culture and traditions of their people. They live in the city of Cuenca. This city is the third most important city in Ecuador. It has many places for enjoying nature. It is bathed by four rivers and has been a World Heritage Site since December of 1999.

One of the members of this group is María Margarita. She is taking out her second loan in the communal bank Estrellitas. She lives by a beautiful area of the city of Cuenca.

María Margarita is 62 years old, is married and she has conceived 5 children as fruit of this marriage who are now adults, 4 of them are married and live independently. Her unmarried son works and helps her economically. Her husband is a merchant. She doesn’t have her own home so she lives in the home of her son.

María Margarita has worked selling underwear and aprons for 25 years. She works in this business every day and she sells her merchandise throughout the city.

She is going to invest her new loan in the purchase of underwear to expand her business.

Her dream is to have no debts and to get ahead.
