A loan of $400 helped to buy condiments.

Mariam's story

Mariam, aged 33, is married and the mother of three children. She lives with her husband in Médine-Sikasso (third administrative region of the republic of Mali).

After being involved in several unsuccessful activities, Mariam started to buy and sell onions over two years ago, at the new market in Médine. She has her own table there and thanks to the quality of her goods, her products are in high demand from her customers.

In order to meet the needs of an increasing number of customers, Mariam decided to join the microfinance institution Soro Yiriwaso two years ago. She is now on her sixth loan, which will help her to increase her business and to buy 35 bags of onions (20 bags of small-bulb onions and 15 bags of large-bulb onions).

Mariam sells her goods for cash to a customer base which mostly consists of housekeepers.

Thanks to this new loan, Mariam is expecting average monthly profits to reach 80,000 CFA francs, which will be used to contribute to the family expenses and to pay off her loan's interest. The rest will be reinvested in her business.
