A loan of $3,600 helped a member to buy an embroidery machine and also improve her work conditions by renewing her work area's floors and walls.

Parwin's Group's story

Parwin is a 24-year-old, young Iraqi woman. She is married and a mother of one child. With limited career options due to cultural restrictions and domestic constraints, Parwin is one of the many Iraqi women who are working from home, using her sewing skills to generate some income and participate in meeting the financial needs of her family. Parwin learned to sew at a young age, and has 10 years sewing experience. For her small, home-based business she already completed a small loan in the past which she used to purchase a generator, an overlock sewing machine, and a table for the machine. Having successfully repaid the previous loan and still looking for ways to improve her business, she is now taking a new loan. This time she would like to buy an embroidery machine and also focus on improving her work conditions by renewing her work area's floors and walls.

Relief International - Microfinance Iraq offers "Group loans" for clients unable to provide a guarantor - thereby unable to apply for a loan as an individual. As a group, the members collectively guarantee the loan. Groups consist of 3 to 5 clients and each client is evaluated on his or her repayment capacity. All group members receive the same loan amount as the individual with the lowest repayment capacity in the group.
